Short Eared Owls

A fast flying and acrobatic bird common throughout the whole world, the short eared owl is capable of amazing maneuvers and hunting abilities. Often found in marshes and open fields or grasslands, they use a diving technique to pounce onto their prey and battle each other for food. More prevalent during the winter, in the northeast United States they come out to hunt at dusk and dawn and their signature barking noises that almost mimic a small dog can be heard during the hunt. This owl chooses to nest on the ground surrounded by tall grasses or bushes and seemingly rises out of nowhere to begin its hunt or to challenge the harriers that often share their territory.
