There are many species of hawks in the northeast United States and Virginia area. Red tailed hawk, red shouldered hawk, coopers hawk, northern harrier, and american kestrel are the most common. They are often seen perched in trees and fences or along power lines and roadways where they can survey the area for rodents and other prey, and for the coopers hawk this includes smaller birds quite frequently. The hawk is usually a skittish bird and chooses to nest in a higher tree branch and keeps a close watch on their young until they grow and head off on their own.
